“Totem and Tabu”

Totem dhe Tabu” is an experimental tandem of contemporary dance and minimal text that enables the audience to reflect on the issues raised, which intertwine with their lives and the Kosovar mindset.

The performance raises questions about major social situations and concerns, trauma, the impact of the pandemic, and social hypocrisy, without reaching conclusions, aiming instead to touch the depth of experiences, emotions, and events presented in the form of images and monologues.

The questions, reflections, issues, and themes explored remain isolated within individual and collective “Frames” that are taboo for society or fail to penetrate public discourse.

In a time before and during the pandemic, our characters adapt, change, evolve, but also confront their deepest and most irrational fears.

These emerge as a result of isolation and trigger hysteria, paranoia, and reflection on killings, the Kanun and intergenerational trauma, as well as the relentless pursuit of love and inner peace.

The search for calm and peace after major storms connected to emotional and physical violence and past trauma intertwines with traditions as a Totem carried across generations, linked to the Kanun and customs that often suppress and promote inequality, and which still persist as remnants of the past among new generations of Kosovar women and men.

The theatrical show “Top Girls”

Top Girls” is a 1982 play by Caryl Churchill; it is an exploration of what it means to build a life within a patriarchal society.

“Top Girls” comes to Kosovo in a modern version directed by Shkurtë Aliu, revealing the current mindset of the patriarchal system in Kosovo and showing the subtle ways in which patriarchy controls women’s lives.

The play explores the roles available to women in modern society, shows the price women pay for success in professional life, and also what it means to be a successful woman in society. Women will never truly be free until they are liberated from the boundaries of patriarchal society.

The theatrical performance “Top Girls” is a co-production of Artpolis & T.Q.P. “Dodona”
